Podcast 142 – Theme List Discussion!

Privateer Press announced a bunch of new Theme Lists! Huzzah! We spend almost an hour discussing those Themes, and talk a little bit about some New Years Resolutions for WarMachine…

Overall, a good, short podcast! Back to Batreps for next week, probably! Until then, give this one a listen, let us know what ya think.

Also, under the cut you can see some theme lists that Nick, Kassem, and I are excited to try out in the coming weeks. Maybe you’ll get some inspiration for your own lists!

Let’s start with Nick’s lists: he wasn’t able to podcast with us, but he’s very excited about the following:

NICK:
Here’s what I’ve come up with that I want to try out when I get back.

Retribution of Scyrah – Rahn theme

Theme: Forges of War
74 / 75 Army

Adeptis Rahn – WJ: +26
–    Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker – PC: 0
–    Helios – PC: 34 (Battlegroup Points Used: 26)
–    Phoenix – PC: 18
–    Phoenix – PC: 18

Arcanist Mechanik – PC: 2
Arcanist Mechanik – PC: 2
Arcanist Mechanik – PC: 2
House Shyeel Artificer – PC: 0
House Shyeel Magister – PC: 4

House Shyeel Battle Mages – Leader & 5 Grunts: 10
House Shyeel Battle Mages – Leader & 5 Grunts: 10

Rahn’s list is centered on control and assassination. Double Phoenix could be double Manticore + Chimera perhaps. But Rahn likes the double arc node. Helios can be used to place the perfect Force Hammer target and Rahn and Battle Mittens will kill most casters and second Phoenix can be in position to finish the job if needed.

Due to the theme it loses access to any units other than HSBMs. But gets 9 free points and warjacks get shield guard.

I picked Rahn for the list initially because he like BMs but I’m not sure he’s the best fit.

List2 – Helynna

Retribution of Scyrah – Helynna theme.

Theme: Forges of War
74 / 75 Army

Magister Helynna – WJ: +30
–    Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker – PC: 0
–    Manticore – PC: 14
–    Manticore – PC: 14
–    Manticore – PC: 14
–    Manticore – PC: 14
–    Helios – PC: 34 (Battlegroup Points Used: 30)

Arcanist Mechanik – PC: 0
Arcanist Mechanik – PC: 2
Arcanist Mechanik – PC: 2
House Shyeel Artificer – PC: 0

House Shyeel Battle Mages – Leader & 5 Grunts: 10

This is a ball busting anti-ranged list. With tons of shield guards and DEF14 Helios against shooting. Helios is there as hard hitting anchor or to drag in enemy heavies for loaded up manticore to take out. Helynna also adds an additional 3″ pull with her gun on top of Helios which gives the list a boatload of control.

Feelings on the theme.
It’s a bit too restrictive and the benefits aren’t super great. I might look into playing it with a super upkeep strapped caster like Thyron or Garyth. It seems OK if you wanted to take a jack heavy force anyway and now they get shield guard and a few free solos. But most Jack heavy lists I’ve made so far in mk3 are improved by dropping a heavy for a unit of sentinels.

List 3 –  Fyanna Ravens theme.

Super first impression. Need to play this one to see if I like it.

Legion of Everblight – Fyanna theme

Theme: Ravens of War
75 / 75 Army

Fyanna, Torment of Everblight – WB: +28
–    Angelius – PC: 17 (Battlegroup Points Used: 17)
–    Angelius – PC: 17 (Battlegroup Points Used: 11)

Blighted Nyss Sorceress & Hellion – PC: 6
Annyssa Ryvaal – PC: 8
The Forsaken – PC: 4
Strider Deathstalker – PC: 4
Strider Deathstalker – PC: 4
The Forsaken – PC: 4

Grotesque Raiders – Leader & 9 Grunts: 12
Blighted Nyss Raptors – Leader & 4 Grunts: 18
Strider Scouts – Leader & 5 Grunts: 9
–    Strider Scout Officer & Musician – Officer & Musician: 0

Fyanna seems to lose the least by taking the theme. The anti-AD benefit can be ball busting into some matchups. There are many very popular units that have AD that suddenly losing makes them super sad. Trenches,  Idrians,  Sentry Stones.  Make no mistake these units loosing AD changes how useful they are able to be in the armies in which they are played.  For the love of God I’m glad the Hellmouth isn’t affected by it.

I still want some heavy hitting the list therefore Raptors. Grot raiders because ambush in them is cute. Strider scouts because they are baller especially with S&H to put down blight storm.

Feelings on theme. It’s a bit restrictive but has strong benefits. Whether it’s worth it can be meta dependant. Certain factions are going to hate having their AD removed more than others. Circle hates it the most. Cygnar and Menoth are close second for Idrians and trenchers.

KASSEM:
Xerxis2
-Cannoneer
-Sentry

2x Reivers full + UA
2x Slingers full
2x Catapults free
Flayer free
2x willbreakers

(Kassem has offered no further feedback other than the list itself… but hey, who knows how powerful it’ll be in a few weeks!)

MARC:

I mentioned during the podcast that I really like the Cygnar theme. Balanced, interesting sacrifices to good rewards, not game breaking, but does encourage using different model/units.

The most obvious choice is Nemo3, and here’s what I came up with at 1am…

Artificer General Nemo (Nemo3)
– Finch
– Squire
– Dynamo
– Firefly
Journeywoman Warcaster
– Firefly
Katherine Laddermore
Stormblade Captain x2
Stormblade Infantry
– Officer and Standard
– Stormgunner
Silver Line Stormguard (max)
Storm Lances (max)

Pros: A lot of free models (SB Officer, one of the Captains, and the Squire), AD on the ‘Blades, and Lances + Laddermore are always good. Feat will be cripplingly powerful.
Cons: No Reinholdt, horrible Cygnar mirror match, only 1 ARM buff to help the army cross the field, not many long range guns.

Options: Drop 1 of the Captains for a Storm Tower, or even the Gunner and the Silver Line for a Storm Strider (they’re damn impolite with Nemo3!).

Other options for good warcasters include Jakes2, any of the Strykers, and of course the other Nemos!

DARRELL:

Protectorate of Menoth – Thyra

Theme: Guardians of the Temple
75 / 75 Army

Bunker – Steamroller Objective

Thyra, Flame of Sorrow – WJ: +29
–    Blood of Martyrs – PC: 16 (Battlegroup Points Used: 16)
–    Dervish – PC: 7 (Battlegroup Points Used: 7)
–    Reckoner – PC: 16 (Battlegroup Points Used: 6)

Nicia, Tear of Vengeance – PC: 0
Vassal Mechanik – PC: 1
Vassal of Menoth – PC: 3
Vassal of Menoth – PC: 3
Wrack – PC: 1
Wrack – PC: 1

Choir of Menoth – Leader & 3 Grunts: 4
Daughters of the Flame – Leader & 5 Grunts: 10
Daughters of the Flame – Leader & 5 Grunts: 10
Flame Bringers – Leader & 4 Grunts: 17
Flameguard Cleansers – Leader & 9 Grunts: 15
–    Flameguard Cleanser Officer – PC: 0

  1. Just wanted to point something out about the Khador theme. From reading it in warroom, not all Winter guard get sac pawn, only the warcasters gain sac pawn to [winter guard]…

the main benefit I seen (thanks to the giant thread on the forums), was bringing the battle engine to sac pawn onto, then healing it with mechanics.

Personally, I’m on the fence with the theme forces. Some of them seem really strong, while some of them seem quite lackluster.

    • Thanks for the catch! Totally my fault there… should’ve paid more attention. I *still* think the Khador Theme list is extremely strong, and probably the strongest Theme list currently available. I’ve seen a few Ravens of War themes that look pretty good, and obviously the Retribution one is interesting.

I’m excited about the Cygnar Theme list, personally, but I also understand why others are not (it doesn’t really help several of our S-Tier warcasters… Sloan or the Haleys specifically).
